a brief introduction
When people talk about education, they frequently conflate it with schooling. When people see or hear the word, they often think of locations like schools or universities. They may also consider specific vocations such as teacher or tutor. The difficulty is that, while many schools and teachers are trying to help people learn, the way they work isn't always what we can call education. They have chosen, or have been driven, into ‘schooling,' which is forcing learning into people according to a plan devised by others. Paulo Freire (1973) coined the term "banking" to describe this process of depositing knowledge. It is all too easy for such ‘schooling' to devolve into treating students as things.
